Beginning in the early 1980s in urban Jamaica, dancehall music developed from a response to the dominance of traditional reggae. At first, it was marked by selectors toasting to instrumental tracks, quickly changing into a distinct combination of electronic sounds, driving beats, and sometimes explicit lyrics.
